Walmart is expanding health care coverage for employees who want to use a doula, a person trained to assist women during pregnancies, in an effort to address racial inequities in maternal care. After first offering doulas to employees in Georgia last year, Walmart said Wednesday that it will expand the same benefit to its employees in Louisiana, Indiana and Illinois. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Walmart says it chose to extend coverage to states where the impact would be immediate. It said the mortality rate in Louisiana is five times higher for Black mothers than it is for white mothers and that in Indiana, 33 counties don’t have OB-GYN services.

Witnesses say passengers were screaming and panicking as a jetliner carrying 126 people caught fire during a hard landing at Miami International Airport. Passenger Mauricio Davis says “people were grabbing the seats to keep from spinning around.” And passenger Paola Garcia says she thought she was going to die. Airport officials say RED Air Flight 203 was returning to Miami from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic when the front landing gear collapsed. That started a fire in the nose of the MD-82 jetliner. Three passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

CHICAGO — A federal judge recently agreed to dissolve a 42-year-old court mandate on minority hiring within the Chicago Fire Department, finding that minority representation had increased substantially since its implementation in early 1980.

An IRS watchdog says customer service issues are worsening at the tax-return-processing agency. A new report from the National Taxpayer Advocate says taxpayers are experiencing longer wait times on the phone, there’s an even bigger backlog of paper returns than there was a year ago, and delays in processing paper returns have been running six months to one year. The report on taxpayer challenges is submitted twice a year to Congress. The latest edition comes one day after the Internal Revenue Service announced that it is on track to eliminate its 2021 backlog of tax returns.

Queen Elizabeth II and her grandson Prince William have paid tribute to Britain’s Caribbean immigrants for their “profound contribution” to the U.K. The royals' tribute came as a national monument was unveiled in London to celebrate the migrants’ work to help rebuild Britain after the devastation of World War II. William and his wife, Kate, unveiled the statue, which depicts a man, woman and child standing atop suitcases. In his speech, William highlighted the racism faced by thousands who journeyed to Britain in the post-war years. In a written message, signed Elizabeth R., the queen said the new statue was a “fitting thank you" to the migrants.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Assembly Democrats are forming a select committee to investigate why the state’s $6-per-gallon gas prices are among the nation’s highest.

The Biden administration announced Wednesday that it is providing logistical support to import the equivalent of about 16 million 8-ounce baby formula bottles from Mexico. That starts this weekend as part of efforts to ease nationwide supply shortages caused by the closure of the largest US manufacturing plant. Trucks contracted by the Department of Health and Human Services will drive about 1 million pounds of Gerber Good Start Gentle infant formula from a Nestlé plant to U.S. retailers, the White House says. That's nearly double the amount imported to the U.S. to date. Cargo flights from Europe and Australia already have brought baby formula into the U.S., and more will come this weekend.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for two people reported overdue after they decided to return to Virginia in their weather-damaged boat instead of continuing to Portugal’s Azores. Coast Guard officials announced Tuesday that Virginia Beach natives Yanni Nikopoulos and Dale Jones, both 65, are missing. They left Hampton on June 8 for the Azores Islands. But five days later, the Coast Guard says the pair told Jones’ daughter they were returning after weather damaged their vessel. They were about 460 miles from Virginia Beach when they called, but no further communications were received.  Officials say they're tracking cell phone and radio pings and working with counterparts in Bermuda to find the best search area for air crews.

Burkina Faso’s ruling junta says it will create two military zones where civilians must vacate their homes to allow the army to battle jihadi rebels without any hindrances. A statement by the military’s National Operations Command said the two zones will be established in the country’s hard-hit East and Sahel regions and the ministry of defense will form a new brigade to unite all security forces. The move is the latest attempt by Burkina Faso’s military junta to secure the West African country amid escalating attacks by jihadi rebels linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group. In January, mutinous soldiers ousted the democratically elected president, saying they could do a better job at securing the nation.

European Union lawmakers are requiring deeper emission cuts from power plants, factories and planes in Europe while endorsing an unprecedented import tax to step up the fight against global warming. The European Parliament on Wednesday advanced draft climate legislation that would slash the EU's greenhouse gases by at least 55% in 2030 compared with 1990 rather than by a previously agreed 40%. The legislation also includes a tool that would allow the EU to raise the prices of steel, aluminum and some other imported goods that are spared the climate-protection costs faced by manufacturers in the 27-nation bloc.

In the 50 years since the landmark law was passed, profound strides have been made in women and girls’ participation in sports. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, women now make up 44% of all NCAA athletes, compared to just 15% in 1971. Nearly 3.5 million high school girls play sports, compared to less than 300,000 in 1972. But for Black women and women of color in sports, those gains have not been equally shared, reflecting the limitations of a policy that only addresses equity on the basis of sex and gender.

Massachusetts' highest court rules that a referendum on imposing a "millionaire tax" can go before voters in November.

Georgia’s highest court has overturned the murder and child cruelty convictions against a man whose toddler son died after he left him in a hot car for hours. The Georgia Supreme Court opinion released Wednesday says the jury saw evidence that was “extremely and unfairly prejudicial.” Justin Ross Harris, 41, was convicted in November 2016 on eight counts including malice murder in the death of his 22-month-old son, Cooper. A judge sentenced him to life without parole as well as 32 more years in prison for other crimes. The high court upheld Harris’ convictions on three sex crimes committed against a 16-year-old girl that Harris had not appealed.

The highest court in Massachusetts has ruled that the wording of a ballot question for a proposed “millionaire tax” constitutional amendment is legal and the measure can go before voters in November. The amendment would impose a 4% surtax on the portion of an individual’s annual income that exceeds $1 million. It had been challenged by a business group and others who said that the question’s wording that said revenues raised by the surtax would be spent of education and transportation is “completely misleading.” The Supreme Judicial Court in its decision Wednesday said the wording is in compliance with the state constitution.

The biological family of two boys who authorities say were killed by their adoptive parents have filed a federal lawsuit alleging civil rights violations and wrongful death.

Syrian state TV says the international airport in Syria’s capital will resume flights after nearly two weeks following an Israeli airstrike that caused serious damage to the facility. The outlet quoted the Transportation Ministry on Wednesday as saying that flights will resume at Damascus International Airport on Thursday adding that all companies “should schedule their arriving and departing flights as of this date.” The June 10 Israeli airstrike caused significant damage to infrastructure and runways and rendered the main runway unserviceable. Work has been ongoing since then to repair the damage and flights have been mostly diverted to the international airport in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he wants to discuss the outlines of a “Marshall plan for Ukraine” with the leaders of the Group of Seven countries at their upcoming summit. Scholz hopes for a united front on long-term support for Ukraine when he hosts the annual G-7 summit in Bavaria next week. The chancellor told Germany’s parliament Wednesday that “rebuilding Ukraine will be a task for generations.” Recalling his visit last week to Irpin, a Kyiv suburb that saw intense fighting, he said that “some things there remind not just me of the pictures of German cities after World War II.” The U.S.-sponsored Marshall plan plan helped revive European economies after WWII.

European Union leaders will seek to offer support this week to six Western Balkan nations that have long been knocking at the bloc’s doors. Now, these countries also see the war in Ukraine raging not far from their borders, amid fears that Russia could turn its sights on their region. The two-day summit starting Thursday in Brussels is expected to approve the European Commission’s proposal to give Ukraine and Moldova candidate EU membership status, the beginning of a long process that the Western Balkan Six started years ago. The EC has repeatedly told Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia that their future lies within the 27-nation bloc. But progress has stalled — for all sorts of reasons.

Paris prosecutors are investigating complaints by two women who have accused a member of the French government of rape during medical exams. The government member is a woman who worked as a gynecologist before joining politics. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou was named secretary of state for development last month. She and her office have not commented publicly on the accusations that emerged on Wednesday. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it ordered an investigation. French media reports say the women accuse Zacharopoulou of penetration during medical exams without their consent. French law defines rape as any act of sexual penetration committed on others by violence, coercion, threat or surprise.

A Florida high school will retire its “Chiefs" mascot following an emotional school board meeting over the Native American symbol. An online petition with more than 6,000 signatures sought to keep the mascot. Many graduates of Chamberlain High School told the school board on Tuesday that they believe the mascot conveyed honor and respect. But student leaders and the district's Native American Parent Advisory Council recommended the change after a survey found 58% of students consider the “Chiefs” tradition offensive. The school plans to raise the $50,000 needed to change the school's branding and uniforms, and students will select a new mascot this fall.

The leaders of Israel’s broad-based but severely weakened coalition government have thrown in the towel this week, after barely 12 months in office. They plan to dissolve parliament and set the stage for elections — the fifth in less than four years. Why does this keep happening? The simplest answer is that Israel is deeply — and almost evenly — divided over whether Benjamin Netanyahu should be prime minister. But it’s also because Israel’s political system consists of an ideologically diverse array of parties that have to form alliances — and sometimes break them — to get what they want.

James Rado, co-creator of the groundbreaking hippie musical “Hair,” which celebrated protest, pot and free love and paved the way for the sound of rock on Broadway, has died. He was 90. Friend and publicist Merle Frimark says Rado died Tuesday night in New York City of cardio respiratory arrest. “Hair,” which has story and lyrics by Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, was the first rock musical on Broadway, the first Broadway show to feature full nudity and the first to feature a same-sex kiss. “Hair” made possible other rock musicals like “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Rent.”
